On Tuesday 8th May 2019 an extra special trip was arranged by Matt Beeton, CEO of Port of Tyne Authority for a group of children from Connected Kids Club, our affordable after-school club.

Following an earlier visit to our centre, Matt was keen to help the children understand about the work of Port of Tyne and arranged a trip to North Shields to see what happens at the terminal and give them a chance to take a trip on the Sir Bobby Robson.

The group were put to work mopping the decks before getting a chance to drive the boat. All the children took a turn at driving the tugboat and pilot boat and were given a goody bag and lunch box as a reminder of this amazing trip.

All the kids took to the water well and rose to the challenge of of a rather choppy ride as the Pilot decided it was time to go a little fast and do some turns across the river. Our Lead Playworker, Sarah, didn't fare quite so well!

They even saw seals which was a real highlight for some of the children.

It was a brilliant and unique trip out which was only possible thanks to the Port of Tyne Authority. The plan is that the visit will inspire the children to produce some artwork which if good enough might adorn the walls of the main office of Port of Tyne in South Shields.
